Plaxiphora biramosa (Quoy & Gaimard, 1835
This almost three inch chiton is elongate oval in shape and has rather flat valves which are colored creamy yellow and olive-green with wavy longitudinal streaks of dark purplish brown. Many specimens have valves strongly encrusted. The lateral areas are only slightly raised marked by a vague, wide rib. The central area has an irregular pattern of longitudinal, curved wrinkles. The dark reddish brown and fleshy girdle is wide, sometimes encroaching at the sutures. The girdle is covered with small, roundish corpuscles, intersperced with minute needles.
Illustrated specimen is from the Burghardt Collection and was collected in Arawoana, New Zealand.
