Onithochiton literatus (Krauss, 1848)
This elongate chiton has parrallel sides. It is arched and growth marks can be seen in outer margins of all valves. The central areas are covered with numerous, deep, longitudinal and diagonal grooves. The grooves in the lateral areas are broken and irregular. The background color of the valves is dark with sculpture several shades of lighter brown. The girdle is brown and appears to be felty, but is densely covered with short, stout, rather blunt spicules.
The illustrated specimen is from the Burghardt Collection and was collected in Natal, South Africa.
