Mopalia muscosa (Gould, 1846)

This 3 1/2 inch chiton has a medium wide girdle which is sandy and profusely covered with stiff bristles. The mucro is highly posterior and depressed. The central areas are longitudinally ribbed with sharp nodulose ribs transversed with subtle wide obsolete ribs forming a basketweave. The lateral areas are sharply defined by a heavily beaded rib. The inside area is covered with oval shaped granulations. The color of the valves ranges from grays to black. Rarely, a specimen with blue or orange valves may be found. The color of the girdle is cream with brownish red bristles.
