The general purpose of the Straight Life Program is to (1) reduce juvenile crime; (2) assist concerned community agencies who work directly with juvenile offenders and potential offenders in their efforts to free them from their misconceptions about crime and its consequences; (3) provide a new and valuable resource for the community and the criminal justice system : and (4) create an opportunity for Deuel Vocational Institution inmates to utilize their prison and/or life experiences in a positive way.
The program is staffed by volunteer inmates and Deuel Vocational Institution staff members. Juvenile referrals are accepted from parents, legal guardians, schools, churches, social services, members of the judiciary community as well as city/county governments and law enforcement agency officials from San Joaquin, Sacramento, Stanislaus and other areas within the State of California.
Juveniles in the ages of nine (9) years old through seventeen (17) years old, male and female are eligible.
Adults 18 years and older must possess a valid California drivers license with photo or California identification card with photo.
The program consists of three (3) consecutive Saturday or Sunday sessions with juveniles and their parents/guardians. There are also weekday sessions (Monday) available for schools and other institutional programs. Each session starts at 8:00 AM and ends at 1:30 PM. The sessions are designed to develop a certain amount of inmate - juvenile interaction in which the juveniles can confront problems and experiences that they might find difficult to discuss with their parents or other adults without loss of face or fear of censorship.
The Straight Life Program is funded by Deuel Vocational Institution with the approval of the Warden. Items required for the program which are not funded are purchased using the monies received through fund raising food sales. These sales are conducted within the prison by the inmate members of Straight Life. This equates to a fully funded program and allows Deuel Vocational Institution to provide the program and lunch to the user free of charge. The only cost to the user is transportation and time.
If you would like more information about the program or would like to make an appointment please call the Straight Life answering machine at (209) 832-0496, please speak slowly and clearly. I will return your call as soon as possible.
