Some History on the Ragdoll Breed

          RW Furreal Zapata's Nina
The Ragdoll Breed has it's origins in the United States, and is a well known purebreed. It was originally created by mating a white Persian-type female to a Birman-type male. The kittens were then bred to a Burmese-type cat. The results are the foundation of the Ragdoll breed we know today.

The personality of the Ragdoll was one of the most important factors in the development of the Ragdoll breed. A cat that was so relaxed and laid back that it could easily be compared to a child's ragdoll.

The breed was first introduced in 1965 in California and accepted for championship showing shortly thereafter. While there was originally some controversy surrounding the Ragdoll, (such as the Ragdoll not being able to feel pain, the Ragdoll is after all, a cat like any other feline and quite capable of feeling pain!) myths which have been disproved. It is now one of the most popular, unique and beautiful breeds.

Ragdolls are quiet, affectionate and gentle cats. The are very sociable and loving. Ragdolls are slow to mature and reach full maturity in 3-4 years. Neutered males weigh between 13-20 lbs. Adult females weigh about 5 lbs. less.

Many people often comment on the Ragdoll's personality. They follow you from room to room and like to play fetch, more of what one would think of as dog like qualities. The Ragdoll is not one to hide under a bed but wants to be the center of attention. They get along well with children, dogs Furreal Tigerwoods - Seal Mitted Lynx - AKA Rags and other cats. Ragdolls are inside cats and we highly recommend that they not be let out of doors - unless they are placed in a covered play pen and supervised. Because the Ragdoll breed is so sociable they could easily be taken by a stranger, or harmed by another animal.

A low maintenance breed of cats, they seldom mat and require very little grooming. Their fur is rabbit like and plush. Combing and nail clipping on as needed basis should keep them in beautiful condition.

The Ragdoll breed is recognized with the American Association of Cat Enthusiaists (AACE), American Cat Association (ACA), American Cat Fanciers Association (ACFA), Cat Fanciers Association (CFA), The International Cat Association (TICA), and United Feline Organization (UFO) just to name a few in the United States. Ragdolls are also shown and accepted by most International registries.

There are two primary Ragdoll breed clubs; Ragdoll Fanciers Club International (RFCI) and Ragdolls International (RI).
