Marines in Civic Affaires and Politics
JAMES A. BAKER III
James A. Barker, hier of a family of attornys, was born in Houstion. After graduating from Princeton, he joined
the Marines and servred from 1952 - 1954. Having learning how to shoot as a child, Baker became an expert
marksman and was a member of Camp Lajeune's pistol and rifle team. After service obligations ended, he left the Corps
with the rank of Lieutenant and returned home to study law at the university of Texas.
In 1970, Jim joined Congressman George Bush in the candidate's bid for the U.S. Senate. Baker subsequently
worked on the Nixon reelection campaign, served briefly as Under-Secretary of Commerce during the Ford administrationand helped George Bush
secrure the Vice-Presidential spot in 1980. President Reagan selected Baker for his campaign manager and then for his Chief of Staff.
In 1985, before his second term began, Reagan appointed Baker to the post of Secretary of the Treasury.
Baker was selected for the position of Secratary of State in 1989 by his close friend President George Bush.

ROBERT BORK
Robert Bork, jurist and legal scholar, was born in Pittsburgh. After high school, Bork joined the Marine Corps in 1945 and compleated his term
the following year. He recived his B.A. form the University of Chicago but was called back for a second term with the Marines during the Korean War. He finished his degree and practised
law in the Chicago area until the early 1960's.
Bork moved on to teach constitutional law as the Alexander M. Bickel Professor of Public Law at Yale Law School, where his students included Bill and Hillary Clinton. He was Soliciter
General and Acting Attorney general during the Nixon presidency. In 1981, Bork was appointed by president Reagan as Circuit Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia (D.C.).
The Distinguished scholar is the author of The Antitrust Paradox (1978) and The Tempting of America: The Political Seduction of the Law (1990).

JESSE BROWN
Jesse Brown, United States Secretary of Veterans Affairs, was born in Detroit and grew up in Chicago.
After graduating high school in 1963, Brown enlisted in the Marine Corps. While on patrol outside of Da Nang, South Vietnam in 1965, he was wounded by a sniper and his right arm was partially paralized.
He was awarded the Purple Heart and the Vietnam Service Medal. folowing a year of rehabilitation at the Great Lakes Naval Hospital, Brown recived his discharge from the Marine Corps.
He attended Catholic University in Washington, D.C. and moved on to Chicago where he finished his education at Chicago City College and Roosevelt University. While in school, brown joined
the staff of the Disabled American veterans, a nonprofit organization chartered by Congress to represent combat-disabled veterans in there efforts to loby the federal government for health and other benefits. Brown was with the DAV for 26
years. During this time he earned the reputation as a "consummate professional" in winning the appropriate benefits for serviceman od servicewomen.
He was appointed to the cabinet position of Secretary of Veteran Affairs by President Clinton in 1993.

DALE BUMPERS
Dale Bumpers, the political "giant killer," was born in Charleston, Arkansas.
He inlisted in the Marine Corps in 1943 as a privet and mustered out with sergant's stripes in 1946. After his service, he earned his B.A. from the University of Arkansas and a law degree from Northwestern.
Bumpers practiced law in Charleston untill 1970 when he entered the Democratic gubernatorial primaryagainced the heavily favored sergregationist former governor Orval Faubus. He won the nomination in a run-off and faced incumbent liberal Republican Governor Winthrop Rockefeller. Bumpers recived 60% of the vote.
Four years later, Dale ran for the senate and faced the incumbent J. William Fulbright in the Democratic Senatorial primary. Bumpers easily defeated Fulbright. Bumpers won the November 1974 election with 85% of the vote.
Dale is a strong advocate of a national energy and enviornmental policy. He sits on the Senate Appropriations Committee, the Energy and Naural Resources Committee and the Small Buisness Committee.
