9mm Steyr GB

Origin: Austria.
Type: Self-loading pistol
Dimentions: Length 8.5in (216mm); barrel length 5.35in (136mm)
Cartridge: 9mm Parabellum
Feed: 18-round detachable box magazine
Muzzle velocity: 1,181 - 1,377 fps (360 - 420 ms)

The Styer was favored by the US Army Special Forces during the 1980's. It's unusual action makes it tolerant to poor quality amunition. Manufactured by the Austrian firm Steyr-Daimler-Puch, it was discontinued when it failed to win the Austrian Army's orders for a new pistol.
The GB employes a gas-delayed blowback system of operation. When fired, some of the propellant gas is bled off behind the barrel where is retards the rearward movement of the slide untill chamber pressure has droped ta a safe level.
The GB introduced several features regarded as common in the 1990's but whiched raised a few eyebrows. Most obviously , the Gb has no safty catch. Instead it has a "de-cocking lever." The "de-cocking lever", when depresed closes the hammer. This will keep the gun from fireing if droped but all the soldier needs to do is pull the trigger to fire.

The Glock 17 beat the Steyr BG for the Austrian Army contract and is now one of the most sucsesfull pistols in recent history. It is used by around 40% of U.S. law enforcement. In 1990 it was adopted by the U.K.'s Metropolitan Police tactical firearms teams.
Glock pistols use a tough polymer materal for the reciver, it is very durable and much lighter than steal. The Glock 17 has neather a safty catch or a de-cocking lever. it has a "Safe Action". The cartridge is fired by an internal striker. this is partialy cocked when the slide returns to battery, but remains in the safe position untill the trigger is pulled. First, pressure on the twin trigger disengauges the trigger safety; pulling further back fully cocks the striker, releses two more internal safety devices and then fires.

The SIG P226 has an aluminum reciver and formed sheet metal slide. It has no safty catch, instead it has a lever that dropes the cocked hammer. It has a Browning-style lockingsystem; the barrel has a lug above the chamber that engages a recess by the ejection port to lock the slide.
