Many of the design team which worked on the WWII German assault rifle moved to Spain after the war and continued to develop their work. The result was the CETME assault rifle, a cheap and cheerful' weapon which is easy to manufactureand simple to to shoot. The West Germans acquired some 400 CETMEs in 1956 and the design was developed further by H&K to produce the G3. The early CETMEs fired a lighter cartridge than the common 7.62mm NATO, but this was abandoned in 1964.

The Dragunov should only bo compared with other semi-automatic sniping rifles, and there are many of them. Many armies remain wedded to bolt-action weapons, but their perceptions are largely based on the ideas of 30 years ago. Modern semi-autos are every bit as accurate as bolt actions and the Dragunov, while at the cheaper end of the spectrum, is a respectably accurate rifle.

The PSG-1 is based on the standard H&K roller-locked delayed blowback bolt system used in the G3 series of rifles. The barrel is heavier than standard, the butt is adjustable as is the trigger, and the weapon is carfully balanced. It uses a 6x sight, although you can fit any NATO standard scope. It fires normal 7.62 mm x 51 NATO, but the wise sniper will choose match-grade ammunition.
