Rodney Crowell - The Palms in Davis - April 4, 2001    Crowell, after about a seven year hiatus, is back on the road promoting his "The Houston Kid" cd. This cd is a masterpiece. Crowell is a masterful songwriter and a superb performer. I honestly think that "The Houston Kid" should be Grammy material, but it probably has too much substance and not enough corporate promotion for that to happen.

BILLY JOEL & ELTON JOHN  JANUARY 31, 2001 - ARCO ARENA - What a great show! It lasted almost 4 hours. The two superstars played separately and together.

Robert Earl Keen & Paul Thorn - The Crest In Sacramento - January 21, 2001

Al Stewart

Al Stewart at the Palms on January 28, 2000. Stewart sounded as great as ever and the show was lots of fun. Stewart's most famous song is "Year Of The Cat".  The only disappointment was that he didn't sing "Time Passages". Thanks Palms for another great evening of entertainment.

Marshall Tucker Band at the Easyrider's Magazine Bike Show in Sacramento on January 15, 2000. The show was great fun, but I was a bit distressed due to the departure of David Muse from the band. He's such a great musician and the flute and saxophone are so important to the Tucker sound.

I now have a separate page just for the Marshall Tucker Band. Don't ya' dare leave before you visit my MARSHALL TUCKER BAND PAGE.

My first Bob Seger concert was held in the Winterland Arena in San Francisco on April 24, 1977. The concert was great and the opening act was an unknown group called Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. I could sense there was something special about Tom Petty - the live version of "Breakdown" is great. Back to Bob -- I went to another Seger concert in 1978 in Bakersfield. I didn't see him again live until April 1996 when he played at the Arco Arena in Sacramento. My friend and old college roommate, Phil Cowan, made arrangements for us to go backstage to meet Bob and have a photo taken. Phil and I had went to the 1977 concert together so it was amazing that we had the opportunity to see him again almost 20 years later.

RANDY RECOMMENDS.....

I'll use this section to recommend performers/cd's that you probably won't see on MTV, VH1, CMT or hear on your radio station.

Rodney Crowell's cd "The Houston Kid" is a significant and memorable cd.

Slaid Cleaves has a fantastic cd entitled, "Broke Down". Almost every song on the disc is fantastic. I especially like "Broke Down", "Breakfast In Hell", and "Cold and Lonely".

Todd Snider's cd " Happy To Be Here" is great mix of tunes. "Forty Five Miles", "Betty Was Black And Willie Was White", "Lonely Girl", and Ballad Of The Devil's Backbone Tavern" are my favorites.

The best music being recorded is coming from Hightone Records. Their slate of talent includes Bill Kirchen, Big Sandy & His Fly-Rite Boys, Deke Dickerson and the Ecco-Fonics, and Hot Club In Cowtown. Great music!

Twice I've seen Big Sandy & His Fly-Rite Boys at the Palms Playhouse in Davis.  Big Sandy features new music in a rockabilly & western swing style. I bought a couple of Big Sandy cd's and I highly recommend, "Feelin' Kinda Lucky".

I've seen Deke Dickerson and the Ecco-Fonics three times - once at the Zoo Bar in Lincoln, Nebraska, at Old Ironsides in Sacramento and at the Palms in Davis. Great new Rockabilly!

Sweetvine is a band out of Sacramento that seems blends the the sounds of the Allman Brothers, James Taylor and the blues. Sweetvine's self titled cd is great, but unfortunately it is my understanding that the band broke up.

If you like country music that features the California/Bakersfield sound, I recommend Scott Joss and his cd, "Souvenirs".

Bill Kirchen's "Hot Rod Lincoln Live" is too much fun. "Raise A Rukus" and his newest recording "Tied To The Wheel" are gems.

FAVORITES FROM THE 60'S

Like a lot of people my age, I think some of the best music probably came from the 60's and early 70's. I say early 70's because DISCO sucked. Like Bob Seger sang, "Don't try to take me to a disco. You'll never even get me out on the floor. In ten minutes I'll be late for the door. I like that old time rock 'n' roll." As a kid I was one of the original 60's skateboarders. Back then we made our own skateboards in school woodshop. As a skateboarder, I considered myself a sidewalk surfer and I really liked surf music (still do). Jan & Dean were one of my early favorites. The Beatles were incomparable. I am especially fond of the early Beatles song because of their uniqueness and energy. However. I think my favorite Beatles song is Hey Jude.

                      Jimmy Buffett

Jimmy Buffett is one of my longtime favorites. He consistently puts out quality CD's, he's a great musical storyteller, and he certainly has a unique sound. It's hard to pick my favorite Jimmy Buffett song, but "Come Monday" and "Margaritaville" are certainly favorites.  Jimmy's new cd "Beach House On the Moon" is outstanding - how does he keep coming up with such great songs? There's tons of Jimmy Buffett stuff on the web. A good start if you're interested is Son of a Son of a Web Page.
