Cycling The Back Roads Of Solano & Yolo Counties

Born To Be Wild........On A Bicycle

For the last three and a half years, one of my main pastimes has been bicycle riding. I really haven't done any mountain biking, just road cycling. I cycle for the exercise, but I really enjoy being outdoors and enjoying the countryside. My main two routes from Dixon are to the cities of Winters and Davis. I'm starting to ride a little more in the hills by riding to Lake Solano and occasionally I tackle Cantalow Road which is a real challenge for me. Once I rode up the infamous Cardiac Hill -- it is aptly named.

This year, the only organized ride I participated in was the Bike Around the Buttes. This is always a great ride and I look forward to it each year.

1997 Rides.....

JOURNEY FOR SIGHT: In September, I participated in the Journey For Sight ride on the American River Parkway. The neat thing about this ride is that you don't have to worry about cars since the 66 mile ride I chose was entirely on the bike trail. The only drawback was that half of the distance of the ride was backtracking. Overall, a fun day.

BIKE AROUND THE BUTTES: On April 12, I participated in the Bike Around The Buttes bicycle ride. It's early in the season so I just went on the 40 mile ride. The Sutter Buttes are beautiful and the ride organizers did a great job. There were very few cars to contend with and the weather was great. I've never been in a ride with so many rest stops (I started feeling guilty for stopping). If you get the chance next year, I urge you to participate in the Bike Around The Buttes. The ride started from the town of Sutter, not too far away from Yuba City.

1996 Rides.....

In 1996, I rode approximately 2,500 miles. I enjoyed the Northbay Hospital Harvest Celebration and the Davis Bike Club's Foxy's Fall Classic.  Both rides were 64 miles long.

If you know of some good organized rides please let me know via e-mail at rgdmld@inreach.com

I ride a Trek MultiTrak 730 bicycle - yes a hybrid which is often scorned by road bikers and mountain bikers alike. I find the hybrid to be more comfortable than a road bike and a little faster than a mountain bike which suits my needs. To learn more about Trek bikes click here.
