The waiter placed the coffee in front of Dawn and she almost knocked it off the table as she was jarred back to the real world. As she looked up she caught sight of Fred. Fred had been with the Institute the longest. In fact it was he and Steven who had put together the Board of Directors and formed the non-profit organization called New Frontiers so many years ago. The purpose of the Institute was to provide a vehicle for the dissemination of their research efforts with the Dolphins in the first place. Fred, being a financial consultant, since retiring from the Air Force was a most meticulous and punctual man. In past field experiments he was always the one to keep track of the details of each project. His propensity for detail was his normal function and again today that would be his task in this project.
As Fred approached one could see the years of military influence in his carriage...not a large man, but his balding pate and bright and twinkling eyes made him a man with whom you could feel safe. He had reached a point at which you cease to count the years, but instead savor each and every one as they pass. He greeted Dawn with a hug and they exchanged morning greetings and sat down to share an early morning cup of coffee while waiting for the rest of the Group to join them.
It had been such a long time since the last major experiment that they began to reminisce about the past trips. And of course talked of the possibilities of this one. Both shared an inner flame to see these many years of research bear fruit. Having had months of successful preparatory work and the cooperation of Mother Nature, with a beautiful calm day, both felt it was now up to the Group and the Dolphins to demonstrate what was possible.
As they continued to converse they caught sight of Steven. He looked like a child on his way to Disneyland for the first time. The gleam in his eyes is not often seen in the eyes of men approaching 60. He was six foot and 185 pounds with a head of distinguished gray hair, and yet, at this moment he looked like a small excited child. He gave his greeting to Fred, bent over and kissed Dawn while whispering to her " This is the Day!" Ever since they had been brought together by their work with the Dolphins most of their leisure time was spent in search of ways to share and work with Dolphins. All their vacations around the world were always in locations where there were known Dolphin populations. Their work and sharing with the Dolphins had always been at the center of their lives. Now the opportunity to share with the others of the world that there is more than one way to communicate, was at hand. At this moment they all spotted James and he joined them at their table. James, a tall commanding figure about six two with the typical look of a Latin lover that you see in movies. But his dark hair had been replaced by white. With Brown eyes, a trim moustache and a dark complexion he too had the look of excitement in his eyes and a look of hope for this day could be the end of his search for an answer to his problems with offshore oil rigs. As he sat at the table and gave his order to the waiter he nodded at the others and just seemed to slip away into his own thoughts.
Sitting there James began to look back over the many months that seemed but a few short weeks since he had met Dawn and Steven and began to wonder if he would come out of this day being a hero or the fool to his friends and associates? James remembered arriving home from his trip to Acapulco after first meeting Dawn and Steven and sharing what he had seen with his brother. His brother listened attentively and broke out laughing and accusing his younger bother of slipping a cog or two. Who in their right mind could conceive of a man and woman talking to Dolphins? So he had laughed too and ended the conversation. But he couldn't forget what he had seen with his own eyes, and he began to realize that he had to know more. James's brother was still laughing when he left the ranch house the next morning. James's reaction to this laughter was to pick up the phone and call the couple who so intrigued him.
From their reaction to his call he felt they were pleased to again hear from him, but, he assumed that they were still unaware of who and what he really was. They welcomed his call and his request to learn more and they set up an appointment for him to come to their home where they would be pleased to share what they had learned. James remembered on that fateful day in Acapulco when Steven and Dawn had told him how they had spent most of their lives showing others how to do what they had learned and for the most part it had little to no effect on their life long dream of sharing this knowledge with the entire world. In the early days of their work they had told him they had tried to secure grants, loans and contributions to continue their work and all to no avail as they were not known and the subject of their research work was to controversial for anyone to become involved with them. In the last few years they had given up on their dream and were just content in knowing what they knew and sharing with the Dolphins as often as they could.
The day James arrived by cab was a typical California day in late summer...hot and sunny with barely a breeze. Once inside their modest home the informal tone of their meeting was as if they had been friends all their lives. James was excited and wanted to know how he would go about learning to talk to Dolphins. Dawn and Steven slowed him down by telling him that the key to talking to Dolphins was first learning to talk to self. They also explained the procedures to James and told him if he wanted to take the first step they could show him that very day. James stated that was his desire and so Steven sat him down in the den and asked him if he had any experience with visualization (day dreaming)?
James told him that he had become most proficient at it since his sons death. Since then he had found himself often reflecting back upon their relationship and reliving the moments they shared. He felt less lonesome for his son when doing this. " That's exactly what I was doing when we first met," he told him. CiCi had been a place of fond memories for James as his son had always felt this particular oceanarium was his favorite. Therefore James could indulge himself of memories and "day dreams" of he and his son during those good years they shared.
Steven explained that what he was doing was more of a memory but still similar to what they wanted to teach him to do.
As he sat deeply into the soft chair Steven had him shut his eyes and take a few deliberate deep breaths. He then began to speak in a deep slow voice and James began to breathe slower and slower. Once the initial phase of Hypnosis had been achieved Steven moved him mentally to a very special safe place and separated his subconscious mind from the conscious. At this point James was regressed to various times in his life at ten year intervals. Steven would stop at each of these times and ask James to tell him about his location, feelings, surroundings, friends, age and fondest wish of the time.
As Steven approached James's age of 62 he began to speed up and went right by 62 stopping at a point 65 years ago. Once at 65 James was asked to describe his surroundings and he indicated that he was hovering in space...approximately 2,000 miles above the Earth and he felt free and exhilarated. He also indicated he had never been there before and then after a pause told Steven that he was no more than a bundle of energy in Space. He also said that he was immortal as he could move freely through time and space. At this point Steven moved him towards the sun and he continued to share his feelings and senses. Upon reaching the Sun, James felt powerful, free, familiar and comfortable. A short move into the Sun and you could see the marked effect upon James as he became a part of the Sun. Once there he talked of previous encounters and of the multitudes of others that made up this wonderful Super Conscienceness of which he had become an integral part. After experiencing the total of this Consciousness he was moved away from the Sun and back to the orbit around the Earth.
As he descended towards the Bay Area Steven directed his descent to bring him to the new location of Marineworld, in Vallejo. Once there he moved James over the Dolphin research tank and James described seeing two Dolphins in said tank. When Steven told him to drop down to the nearest Dolphin and offer up a greeting, he balked at first. Then tentatively he reached out with his mind and touched the Dolphins mind. At that instant James knew without a doubt that not only was communication with Dolphins possible but it was an exciting, pleasant new experience in his life.
Upon returning James to the reality of Earthbound Humans he was exhilarated. And for the first time since he met Steven and Dawn he was beginning to understand their apparent rapport with the Dolphins. Trying to figure out whether he had just experienced a marvelous fantasy or reality James called Marine world and directed his call to the Research area. He was told that there should be three Dolphins in the tank but just the day before one of them had been moved and so there were only two. With this confirmation he was ecstatic and effervescent with a new found ability.
James could not settle down...his questions and curiosity appeared to be boundless after his initial experience. Steven had to interrupt him and he pointed out that his phone call to Marine World was indeed a cautious move but still could have been a rare coincidence. Dawn and Steven offered to have another short session with James and in this phase they would travel with him. As the three of them slid into an Altered State Steven retained the reigns of control and began to move towards the state of Texas per James's instructions. As they visualized the Gulf of Mexico James directed them toward his ranch near Brownsville. Then he directed them in a north-easterly direction near a small river. At this point Steven and Dawn both began to describe the topography of this section of Texas. Their attention focused on a group of buildings arranged in a rectangular pattern, a short distance from the river. Steven and Dawn described the buildings as approximately 50 feet wide and 150 feet long and Steven indicated that they were Butler aluminum buildings in the sky blue color Butler frequently used. They spotted six of these large buildings in this area and the grouping in relationship to the river. After giving this description to James he was astonished at their accuracy, even to the color of the buildings. He asked them if they could locate a bright red pick up truck on the property and they rose higher above the ranch and spotted a red truck about four miles up river. When they got there they descended to the river and found a pleasant looking white haired man sitting on the bank of the river fishing. In his right hand was a bottle of what appeared to be im ported beer, as the color of the glass was green. After this short excursion to the ranch of James Catalpa they ended the session quietly.
As James sat there looking at the couple he felt a new kind of friendship, a closeness and an understanding that he had never felt before. As he wiped the tears from his eyes he asked "Is this how you talk to Dolphins?"
They told him that this was indeed the method by which they contacted and communicated with Dolphins. He asked to know more and they spent the rest of the day and evening talking of the many encounters that the couple had experienced with the Dolphins in the last twenty years. As the evening drew to a close James asked for any printed materials that had been published by the Institute. The couple gladly presented him with copies of their work, which he eagerly accepted.
After arriving home James had checked with his brother to find out what he had been doing at approximately 6:30 PM. Sunday. He said he had gone about four miles up river to Hogs Bend, and was sitting on the bank doing a little fishing. When James asked if he were drinking any of that imported German beer he was so fond of, his brother laughed and asked how he guessed? James couldn't contain himself and told his brother he had "seen" him sitting on the bank at Hogs Bend drinking that beer even though he was in California. His brother looked at him and asked him what he had been smoking or drinking and both burst into laughter. The laughter quickly turned into a cold grim look as James's brother realized his brother was serious. He became almost hostile and accused him of being an old fool that was being taken in by a bunch of slick con artists and he didn't want to hear any more about it.
After that attack, James left his brother and went to turn in for the evening taking the material the couple had given him. He spent most of the night reading the material. He couldn't believe the thoroughness and multiplicity the Institute had gone through to prove the point that they could talk to Dolphins. Each experiment they had done was more complex and more demanding than the one before. And always you could find success or at least the potential for success had not some outside influence interfered. How could anyone refute this work he wondered? His nights sleep was fitful as he was beginning to see how the ability to talk to dolphins could be of great worth. Upon awakening in the morning James felt he should invite Steven and Dawn to his ranch. Then he and his brother could both talk to them and discuss this work that had been done by them and begin to explore it's uses.
As he spoke to his brother over breakfast about the invitation his brother again became most hostile and argued against it. When it became apparent that James was not going to back down, his brother said "Fine, I wish to meet these people who have turned you into a babbling fool. I also will take pleasure in proving to you that they are fakes and charlatans only interested in your money!"
James interjected telling his brother that these people lacked any idea of who or what he was and his brother laughed and retorted "You mean to tell me you really believe that they have never heard of Catalpa Oil and that they haven't figured out that you are the James Catalpa, one of the wealthiest men in the world?"
James told his brother that he was sure that until the "astral" trip they hadn't given him or who he was any thought or even tried to contact him or the ranch. So why should he be so contemptuous of them? At least meet them and listen to what they have to say then judge them, James asked.
His brother agreed to meet them but warned James that "They will slip up and you will find that they are just trying to get at our money!"
Several hours later, with a heavy heart, James placed a call to the couple and invited them to the ranch. He had decided that one way or the other he had to know. Had what he experienced been real or was it as his brother accused, just a cleverly concocted fantasy. Based on someone's knowledge of the Catalpa Ranch, in an attempt to dupe him out of some money? He had to find away to prove to himself and his brother that what they claimed was reality.
As the waiter brought Jame's breakfast poor James was startled back to the present. The entire Group had now arrived and began partaking of their meal and engaging in nervous small talk. This was the culmination of twenty years of work and it was rather bizarre that all those years of research work were to be riding on this single experiment before the entire world.
