It had been 500 years since he had left Earth for the Stars. So far he had seen well over 100 Star systems. He had been on his way to another star when his scanners picked up a world floating in space, far from any Star system. He had dropped out of jump to see what he had found and it had been a big surprise for him.
He had figured on finding just another hunk of rock, maybe a escaped moon or something like that. Instead he had found an Earth sized planet and as he scanned it, he saw what had been at one time great cities. During the next year he had been recording everything he could, and storing works of art and other knowage from these people in his data banks. He had kept looking for anyplace that would have records of what might have happened. Then he found a dome building sitting in an area that might have been a park, and at first he didn't find a way in, as the dome was seamless and smooth.
Then, while walking around it, he spotted a stone that had some kind of letters engraved into it and it faced the dome. His hand scanner showed it to have a power supply that was almost dead, so he had his ship transfer power to the device. As the power came up, the letters glowed to life and they where in a plain to read order too. He put his hand on each letter in the order and as he did so, the dome came to life and as he pressed the last letter a door formed in the dome and slowly opened up.
Inside he found a vast storehouse of data, not only in sealed computer banks, but also in written books and in paintings which covered the inside walls of the dome. Right away he had his ships computers scan the data banks and record everything, the books where placed in sealed boxes to protect them from any air, as the planets air had long ago frozen and fallen to the ground. Then he set up a scanner and recorded each of the panel sections of the wall paintings, after they had been recorded, he left the dome and as he did so it shut down again, leaving just the stone letters glowing.
His master computer had found in all the data the needed data to translate it all into English. After a few days it was ready to feed it to his mind, so he sat down and opened his mind for the feed. Hours later he closed his mind and walked into the control room of the ship, instead of using the view screen, he walked over and opened the side window and looked at the dark planet below. Only the faint starlight shone on it, and now he had to think about what he had found down there and he had to choose as to if mankind should ever know about it or should it remain hidden forever.
He turned and sat down in the control chair and turned off the rooms lights, so now only the faint starlight shone inside the room. In his mind he played back what had happened to the planet.
The planet had been a moon of a larger gas planet which had been in orbit around a G class star. Because of the orbit of their planet, the field of Astronomy had never reached a high level, it had mostly been used to study the gas planet and the few other ones in orbit around their main star. Other fields had grown to high levels and the people had enjoyed a high life style of living.
One night a old Astronomer who had been mapping their section of the galaxy found that a star had grown brighter during the last year. So he once more made photos of it and using the older photos, plotted it's course. That's when he found that it was heading towards their own star. He contacted others and a major study of the star was under taken. During the next year it was confirmed that it was not going to be a near miss, but the two stars where rushing towards each other head-on. They had about 1,000 of their years before it would happen. During the next year a major project was started, they started major research into the building of starships. It took them almost 300 years to come up with designs of ships that could carry people to other stars. But even then, the amounts of people would be small. The building was started, one ship was built, fueled, loaded, and launched every 10 years. These ships where big ones, each ship would hold 1,000 people in cold sleep for the long trips to other stars. While this went on, the building of the record dome was also done, with the hope that they would never be forgotten. On the day when the last ship was ready to go, a single person stood by the control device and sealed the dome. He then went to the shuttle and went to the ship. Once there, he went to the control room, no one else was awake, and what he had to do was his own job of his picking. On the view screen another much smaller ship was in orbit, he sent the command to it and it's computers stated a count down to launch. He then press the launch control for the sleeper ship and it's engines roared to life and started pushing it out into the dark unknown.
Hours later, the sleeper ship reached the jump point and the stardrive took over and the ship jumped and the being went to a sleeper chamber and went to sleep.
Meanwhile, his old home world was nearing the point in it's orbit where it was as far away from the gas planet as it ever got. At this time the ship in orbit turned on it's stardrive and jumped to the center of the gas planet. When it came out of jump, the jump engine went into overload and turned the ship into a planet killing bomb. Seconds later a new star was born as the gas planet was rent apart by the jump engine overload. The blast pushed the world outward even more and as it did so, it was enough for it to escape the pull of it's own star.
Years later, as the world neared the very edge of the solar system, the two stars came together. The blast that was triggered was bigger than any known super nova that had ever been seen, it wiped out almost the whole solar system, only because this world had already reached the edge was it saved, but even then the shockwave pushed the planet out into the empty void of space and left it drifting forever. This had all been recorded by devices left on in the dome.
At first he had not put any meaning to the super nova blast caused by the two stars, but he had run his computers just to see if maybe it had been seen on earth. When his computers came up with the data, it had surprised him and it had made it harder to figure out what to do next.
The blast itself had happened when mankind was still grubbing on the ground for things to eat. The light had taken another 5 million years to reach the skies of Earth. It had been seen on Earth alright, it had become part of a major event in the history of old Earth. For it had shined it the East and had become known as the Christmas Star!
As he sat in the darkness, he had to ask himself, was mankind ready to know about this? Or should mankind be kept in darkness about it? Then he knew, someday, mankind might be ready to know about this worlds history and how it played a part in his, but no, man was not yet ready for this. These people would not be forgotten as long as there would be a Starlord alive. He reached down and touched one control, deep in his ship a beam of pure raw energy raced along a pathway and jumped from the ship to the world below. For just a very slight split second there was a mini supernova and then the world was gone. He made a note on it in his ships log and that's when he saw the date, on Earth it was Christmas time!
The ship turned until it pointed at another star and the ships engines came to life and it jumped.
Where the world had been, now floated a headstone marker.
